Curiously, the ruins sit on top of a long, narrow hilltop or mesa, with the outer walls built around the sides of the mesa -- which is why, when you look out from the citadel, you see great mountain scenery, not the inside of a wall. Furthermore, at least when I was there a Thursday , there was only a mere trickle of other tourists and even they seemed to be mostly Peruvian, or from elsewhere in South America. To Chachapoyas, it's a long bus trip from either Chiclayo or Cajamarca.

I flew from Lima -- at least for now, Atsa Airlines they have a web-site flies to Chachapoyas two or three times a week. Note that wherever you're flying in the Andes, on whatever airline, weather can be erratic, and delays, even day-long cancellations, are not unusual -- so don't plan too tight a schedule. To get to Kuelap: There are several independent tour offices in Chachapoyas which can arrange the trip for you.

I went on my own, in the following four steps: [1] Mini-van from Chachapoyas to the small town of Nuevo Tingo. The vans leave from the Terminal Terrestre "Land terminal" -- as if there might be another kind that buses and vans would leave from in the SE part of town, easily reached on foot from the town center. The mini-van ride is about an hour's trip, with beautiful rural scenery everywhere. Note that these mini-vans are conventional public transport, and so they stop on the main plaza of Nuevo Tingo. If you plan to board a cable-car see next paragraph , make sure the driver knows -- he will take you on to the cable-car station a short distance out of town.

If you don't know Spanish, the phrase "teleferico, por favor" should do. This is a pleasant, minute ride, with spectacular mountain scenery on all sides. Note that the cable-cars do not leave from the cable-car station at Nuevo Tingo -- at the station, you board a special bus, which takes you on a ride just a few minutes to the actual cable-car platform. They sell only return tickets -- be careful with yours as you hike around Kuelap, for it you lose it, you will have to buy another to get back. There was no ticket queue when I was there -- I just walked right up to the ticket window, and bought mine.

From the visitors' center, you must still hike to the ruins themselves. I neglected to time it, but for me it was roughly 30 minutes, and possibly longer. Unfortunately, it's mostly uphill.

But the path is paved with flagstones, and there are a few nice resting stops along the way. Note that if you don't want to do the hike, you will probably be able to rent a horse at the visitors' center! Hints for Kuelap: [1] You should bring your passport along. I was asked for mine at the cable-car station though not at the Kuelap ticket office itself.

Check your booking conditions

Also -- and rather oddly -- the mini-van conductors Chachapoyas to Nuevo Tingo are required to record each passenger's name, age! You probably won't have a Peruvian ID number, but you may be asked for your passport number instead. I wasn't, but that doesn't mean you won't be. You should also have a water bottle or a canteen, and unless you're sure the day will be cloudy, a hat, and maybe sunglasses.

This is one of the things I love about South America: the rooster calls before dawn. It's getting harder to hear roosters in Mexico, and a lot of Mexico places aren't doing the dawn firecrackers anymore either. There are a lot of Police checks in the area. Apparently due to the drugs business. On several occasions my collectivo s were stopped and thoroughly checked, on one occasion all IDs were taken into office for checking, stop took over 15 mins. Forbes always stood out to all who knew him as being extremely positive, hardworking and one of those one-in-a-million 'club members', whose passion for hockey and community has impacted hockey in Wicklow and beyond forever.

Hockey in Ireland has lost a true gentleman, a committed player, who worked tirelessly for his club. We wish to extend our deepest and heartfelt sympathy to his wife, Carmel and his daughters Evie and Grace, and to his extended family and friends. Forbes collapsed and sadly passed away shortly after playing his usual committed and energetic role in front of our keeper in a victory over Pembroke Wanderers at Nelson Park, East Glendalough School, our home pitch. He will be remembered as a favourite player and coach by club members both young and old.

He was passionate about the game and the club and guided us through our growth from a struggling men's team to a much respected Developing Club with teams competing and playing at all age levels from Primary School to Veterans. In recent years, he began to take an active part in Junior Coaching, as so many players do when their children come of age to carry a stick into combat.

He was an instant hit with the kids and proved to be a terrific asset to his fellow coaches, sharing his experience and wisdom with everyone. He managed to touch people and increase their skills, right across the club. One notable off the pitch achievement was the Clubmark Quality Award this year, an award in which he played a key role as club secretary. Forbes also took an active part in club life and was behind many social and fundraising events.

On the pitch, Forbes began his career with Kilkenny College and was subsequently part of the Carlow team that remarkably rose through the ranks to reach Division 1 in Leinster with a squad of just 12 players, who only trained together during the pre-match warm-up.

What to see in Kuntur Wasi ?

He later played with South East Wanderers, before joining Wicklow in From that time on, Wicklow Hockey Club has grown in strength with his help. Carmel, once again, our condolences; if we can be of any assistance or support to yourself and your girls in times to come, we would be honoured to be able to offer our help' Irish Hockey Association media release.
