The only little inconvenience was that they lock the entrance door for the night and I had to ask to open it when I left early in the morning and when I came late at night. I just felt bad to bother receptionist to wake at 6 am just for unlocking the door for me I think that could be improved somehow. Location is great! Right in the middle of the old town. My room was big and had a private bathroom for a really cheap price in American standards The girl at the reception was super helpful with anything I needed. She spoke some English and could answer all my questions. She also helped me to arrange the shared car to Hanging Monastery and Mt Heng which I really recommend over the public bus since it's a better price and no worries about tons of transfers. Overall I highly recommend this Datong hostel for all budget travelers! And they also have a very adorable dog. The gate is in the back street.
It's not very good to find it for the first time. The three rooms, not the upper and lower shops, very comfortable. The dog is big but good. There's a lot of food around, and it's super delicious. Night views are also good. The system of having to call to enter when the restaurant at the front is closed is pretty inconvenient, especially when you arrive very early or very late.
Good for a youth hostel, a little bit too unprofessional for a full hotel.
