Al-Tayba is a village in eastern Syria, administratively part of the Homs Governorate. It is located in the Syrian Desert, near the Euphrates River to the east and The Ottomans set up a gendarmerie post there afterward. In During the Syrian Civil war, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) captured the village.

One person found this helpful. When you read a book you become immersed in a different world. The world Ms. Erishkigal paints, while interesting, is patchy at best. It's like a comic book in black and white with whole panels half finished. I would have liked a less choppy story line with more depth to the characters, possibly even fewer to enhance the leads. I also felt many of the battle scenes were the usual for this genre by the way quite unrealistic.
If there is a follow-up book, I'm out! This haunting view of a potential future captured my attention from beginning to end.

Loved how the characters and setting showed the difference between Islam and authoritarianism masquerading as Islam. A fairly quick read, left open ended for a sequel, maybe? It's just too short. I wish it had been more involved like her other novels. Now please finish Fairy General!! Good story line. A thought provoking scenario of what life would be like if Muslim terrorists were able to control a part of the United States.
Given the continual flow of undocumented, loosely vetted Muslims into the country and their refusal to assimilate that possibility is not beyond possible. Loved the story and settings. Easy read with suspense and a bit of gory! Loved how Eisa so young fought for so much!

I love apocalyptic novels. She is a teenager and her mother, also Muslim, has some medical training. It is against the Sharia law for a woman to doctor, but she does it anyway ,and is mostly ignored as long as she just doctors women, like birthing their babies. The story is told through her eyes as she and her sister are forced to watch their mother being stoned to death as punishment for disobeying Sharia law.
Because she does not obey the conquering general to stone her mother, she is taken by him and tortured for several days. She would have died at his hands, but some friends who were looking for recruits to fight this murderous group, save her and teach her how to fight and shoot as they wage war against the usurpers to the best of their ability, hoping to take their country back.
